Jordan exceedingly disappointed with UN “dictating”

    By Vesa Lappalainen

Jordan expressed heavy disappointment over a particular Operative Clause in the Draft Resolution sponsored by the United States, as it contained a demand for free elections in Syria. Although this is likely to be reworded into encouraging instead of demanding, Jordan believes any attempts by the Security Council to influence state governments into political change, no matter how softly-worded, is a violation of that country’s sovereignty. Any foreign support to a country’s internal rebellion makes that uprising illegitimate and immature, according to Jordan, whose Delegate accused France of ruining any peaceful resolution of the Syrian uprising by spearheading the international recognition of and political support for the rebel forces in 2012. Whether foreign aid is meant to expedite what is seen as an inevitable transition to democracy is a moot point, and should a fully domestic democratic movement fail, it was not its time yet, says Jordan.
